1. References belong on a separate sheet of paper. Never write them down with your resume or use the phrase “references provided upon request”. Although it is a given that potential employers will ask for references, never give them out unless they request you to. Do be sure that you keep a list with you so that you are prepared to present them when the employer asks. Your reference list should be properly and professionally typed and formatted and it should match the feel and look of your resume. Information about your references should be complete: full name, current title, company name, business address, contact information like phone, cell phone, email and fax numbers should be provided. 2. Those people on your reference list should be the ones who would make the strongest recommendations for you. Colleagues, former co-workers, clients and your supervisors who know your work and have glowing things to say about you can make the best choices. Include references from people of all levels. The key here is to include people who know your skills, strengths and will say positive things about you. People who can speak highly of your accomplishments, work ethics, performance and personality. If you are a fresh graduate, you can include an educational mentor and personal references. It is also a plus if you can add references from your internships or volunteer work. Clergymen and personal friends are fine but avoid putting down relatives and family members. If you already are a professional, previous employers and co-workers with whom you have worked with closely in the past can be your best choice. The idea here is that they can contact a select group of people who can talk about your work ethics and job skills.
